Button-Down Bank Robber Suspected in Six Robberies
SAN BERNARDINO – Redlands police said on Monday that a bank robbery suspect, captured last week in Montclair, was the likely suspect in six robberies since mid-November.
David Michael Younger, 49, was arrested last week in Montclair, one day after the Pacific Western Bank in Redlands was robbed. He pleaded not guilty to two felonies in San Bernardino Superior Court last week. Judge Ken Barr set bail at $1 million.
The FBI, who called him the “Button-Down Bandit,” has linked him to six robberies in Corona, Redlands, Riverside, Yorba Linda, Seal Beach and La Quinta.
The two felonies he was charged with in Superior Court were robbing the Redlands bank and also felony evading. Police said he fled from Redlands police officers, who were assisted by Montclair police, when they came to arrest him.
Younger, who was identified through surveillance footage, was caught after a short pursuit.
The white male suspect, who has sandy blond hair, was wearing a buttoned, collared shirt and blue jeans when he entered the bank on East State St. shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 10.
Redlands police spokesman Carl Baker said Younger left the bank with money, fleeing in a silver Mercedes Sport Utility Vehicle, witnesses having provided police with the license plate number. It was traced to a Hertz rental car agency, eventually linked to Younger.
Two days after the Redlands robbery, both Redlands and Montclair police attempted to contact Younger. He spotted the officers at the residence as he approached in his vehicle. Law enforcement officers pursued him and eventually caught him at San Antonio Ave. and La Deney St. in Montclair.
He was nicknamed the Button-Down bandit because of the button-down shirts he usually wore during the robberies. A man wearing button-down shirts was seen entering the six different banks. According to police, the suspect would hand tellers a note demanding money before walking out and speeding away.

Pot Houses Discovered in Rancho Cucomonga, Fontana
FONTANA – Police quickly linked a marijuana grow house in Rancho Cucamonga on Tuesday with another one that was discovered a day later in Fontana. Yangqiang Chen, 35, of Monterey Park, in neighboring Los Angeles County, was arrested.
San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at a house at 7687 Waterbury Place in Rancho Cucamonga, a gated community, when neighbors reported that the residence had been broken into was made to the law enforcement agency on Tuesday night.
When they arrived, deputies discovered over 400 marijuana plants upstairs, according to reports.
At the Rancho Cucamonga home, investigators discovered a device that was used to bypass the use of electricity, which led to nearly $38,000 in power theft, said authorities.
Deputies arrived at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, learning of Chen’s description. He was found nearby with his wife and three children. He was booked into West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on suspicion of marijuana cultivation and utility theft.
Investigation led to the discovery of a Fontana location.
A search warrant for a home at 6045 Medinah St. in Fontana was obtained where police discovered nearly 750 marijuana plants, plus an electricity theft device, it was reported.
The two residences, both in newer sections of their respective cities, are located within 10 miles of each other.
Sheriff’s deputy Ernest Perez said there are marijuana grow houses in various communities. Some signs include timer lights, rarely seeing homeowners or guests, along with strong odors of marijuana, a skunk-like smell emanating from the homes.
There have been other grow houses descended upon by law enforcement in recent months.

FBI Enters Manhunt for San Bernardino Murder Suspect
SAN BERNARDINO – The FBI has been brought into the search for a murder suspect that allegedly killed his wife on Dec. 1.
A $10,000 reward has also been offered for the capture of Edly Atherley, who has been placed on the FBI’s list of most wanted.
Police spotted Atherley, 29, who is suspected of killing his wife Ashley at the San Bernardino Metrolink train station, three days after the murder. But he disappeared before police, tipped off by a security guard, could get there.
Ashley Atherley was found beaten and stabbed to death in the bathroom at the couple’s apartment on the 2600 block of West College Ave. Police found a car that the suspect had borrowed from a family member, parked near the crime scene, with blood inside.
Reports by law enforcement officials claim Edly Atherley may still be in the area, though he has connections in both Florida and also Belize, a Central American nation.
On Dec. 4, a Metrolink security guard spotted the suspected murderer. Said Lt. Paul Williams: “A security guard asked him if he needed help, but Atherley ran from him so the guard called us. We have reason to believe he’s still in the area.”
The security guard identified the suspect by photo, which has also been distributed publicly in hopes that someone recognizes Athlerley and contacts authorities.
Family members confirmed to police that violence was part of the couple’s history. On the FBI website, Atherley reportedly had a large, gash-type wound that had bled heavily on his right hand, along with an abrasion on his right forearm.
Police, who said Atherley is a workout regular and hikes in the San Gorgonio Wilderness, said family members reported the couple had been estranged for a few months.
Ashley Atherley was buried in the Tampa Bay, Fla. area.

More Suspects Sought in San Bernardino Beating Death
SAN BERNARDINO – Police are still looking for more possible suspects in the beating death of a man on Sunday.
Police said two men were beaten, but a 39-year-old unidentified man died after being involved in a physical altercation at 3 a.m. early Sunday with several people. He remains unidentified, pending notification of family members.
Gerald Gonzalez, 20, of Highland, was arrested in connection with the homicide, according to San Bernardino spokesman, Lt. Paul Williams, adding, “the search for additional suspects is ongoing.” After the beating on West Union St., the victim was taken in a private vehicle to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in nearby Colton. He died at 12:15 p.m. The other victim, a 20-year-old male from San Bernardino, was treated and released for the same types of injuries, said police. Both victims suffered from severe head trauma, said police.
Once investigators arrived, it was determined that a co-worker of the victim was a suspect. Police, who said a verbal dispute led to the deadly altercation, located Gonzalez on Union St., arresting him without incident, later taken to West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.
Williams noted that the death was San Bernardino’s 46th murder victim in 2013, one short of last year’s record total. Last year’s 47th homicide occurred within four miles of Sunday morning’s death.
As of Monday morning, no bail amount had been set for Gonzalez, who is not known to have had a prior criminal history, according to authorities.

Redlands Man Suspected of Killing Mother Faces Court Appearance
REDLANDS – A man suspected of killing his mother and severely injuring his sister in a Saturday morning attack will face an arraignment, which will likely take place on Tuesday.
Pablo Hernandez, Jr., 25, was arrested on Saturday morning after police discovered Ines Hernandez, 46, dead in a home on the 400 block of Doyle Ave. His 21-year-old sister, who was treated and released from Redlands Community Hospital, has yet to be identified by Redlands police. Hernandez, who is charged with murder and attempted murder, will likely appear in San Bernardino Superior Court. Authorities said his appearance will probably not take place until Tuesday afternoon.
Redlands police spokesman Carl Baker said units responded to a call at the Doyle Ave. address shortly after 5:30 a.m. on Saturday. He called the report, “suspicious circumstances.”
Officers discovered the 46-year-old resident dead and her 21-year-old daughter, whose injuries were not specified due to privacy laws. She was treated by Redlands paramedics and transported to the hospital for surgery.
The residence is located in north Redlands, a short distance away from Clement Middle School and a site used for local baseball and football activities. North Redlands is considered a high crime area that usually produces higher number of assaults and murders. The crime scene residence had four people reportedly living there, including the victim, two adult children and a grandchild.
According to reports, part of the police investigation took place at a neighbor’s front porch where a bloody handprint was discovered on the front door of that residence, apparently the results of the daughter seeking help.
Hernandez was taken to West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga, held without bail until his arraignment, said authorities.
