Four Men Shot, One Killed While Repairing Car

SAN BERNARDINO – Police are still searching for a suspect and a motive in a shooting that killed one man and wounded three others late Saturday night.

Mitchell Wayne Davis, Jr., 23, of Rialto, was shot in the upper torso, taken to a local hospital where he died a short time after the 10:46 p.m. shooting. The shooting took place at the corner on the 2800 block of West Victoria St., said police spokesman, Sgt. Gary Robertson. The victims were repairing a car on the street when a four-door black Honda, about a 2004 or 2005 model, drove past the location. “Someone from within that car fired a weapon at the victims,” said Robertson, “striking (all of) them.”

The Honda was last seen going east on Victoria St., likely heading for Foothill Blvd., a high-traffic route that would be easy for a driver to disappear into with its steady stream of other cars. An investigation led by Detective John Munoz reported that police responded to the shooting, discovering that four men had been shot. Davis was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in neighboring Colton, which is a short drive from the shooting scene.

The other three shooting victims, unidentified by police, range in ages between 21 and 46 years of age. They were taken to two local hospitals for treatment and “are expected to survive,” said Robertson. “The investigation showed the victims knew each other,” said Robertson, who reported no known motive has yet been determined.

The shooting scene, which is a residential area, was in a spot close to boundaries including San Bernardino, Colton and Rialto.

SAN BERNARDINO – Police responded quickly to a report of a commercial burglary that led to an arrest of a transient early Friday morning.

Cardell Buttons Roseborough, 35, was tracked down with help from a K-9 unit from nearly Loma Linda University, according to Lt. Paul Williams. The arrest may have stopped a series of burglaries that had likely been committed by this suspect.

Candy’s Beauty Supply store at 1245 North E St. was the targeted business, said Lt. Rich Lawhead, a spokesman for San Bernardino Police. At 5:25 a.m., police received a tip “from an alert citizen.” Police responded and quickly discovered evidence of forced entry into the business.

Williams said Roseborough “fled through the ventilation in the roof of the business … entered into an adjoining business in an attempt to avoid arrest.” A lengthy and thorough search of the business was conducted, said Williams, “by our patrol officers with the assistance of a K9 unit from Loma Linda University.” Roseborough, he said, was located in the adjoining business and taken into custody shortly before 9 a.m.

“Detectives interviewed him,” said Lawhead, “and concluded he is responsible for five burglaries in the area.” Lawhead noted the willingness of citizens in the area made a difference in this case. Without it, he said, “others could continue to commit crimes.”

The case will, Lawhead said, “be submitted for consideration to the District Attorney’s office.” Roseborough is being held on $25,000 bail, according to records.

Agents Seize $7.2 in Meth, 2 Arrested in Raid

SAN BERNARDINO – A methamphetamine conversion lab, operating in the county community of Hinkley, was raided, two people arrested while law enforcement agents seized over $7 million in meth products.

This week, Miguel Angel Sanchez, 24, and Jorge Valdez, 34, both of Hinkley, appeared in San Bernardino Superior Court, each facing two felony counts.
They had been booked at the San Bernardino County Jail, currently held on $1 million bail for felony charges of manufacturing and possession of the sale of methamphetamine.

It was state Attorney General Kamala D. Harris that announced the arrest of both men. State Department of Justice agents, along with San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department detectives, raided the Hinkley location, seizing a total of 206 pounds of crystal methamphetamine along with 250 gallons of liquid methamphetamine.
Authorities stated the liquid form was capable of producing 1,250 pounds of crystal methamphetamine.

The street value of all methamphetamine is estimated at $7.2 million, according to a media release.
California is the epicenter of methamphetamine trafficking and distribution, said Harris in a release. “Methamphetamine is one of the most toxic drugs available, destroying the bodies and minds of countless people.”

Harris says she has made it a priority in the state’s task forces to stop its sale and manufacturing.
“This bust,” she said, “significantly reduces the amount of methamphetamine on our streets …”
The investigation was headed by the state Department of Justice task force, leading agents to a residence at 37767 Mountain View Rd. in Hinkley, according to law enforcement reports. It was believed that a methamphetamine conversion lab was being operated.

Agents got a search warrant for the raid, which included state DOJ, county sheriff’s, California Highway Patrol and Homeland Security Investigations all taking part.
“Drug use undermines traditional values,” said County Sheriff John McMahon, “and it is our responsibility to put an end to it.”

Said San Bernardino County District Attorney Mike Ramos: “We look forward to prosecuting these individuals to the fullest extent of the law and sending the message that this type of behavior will not be tolerated in San Bernardino County.”

Man Arrested After Being Lured by 15-Year-Old ‘Decoy’

HIGHLAND – San Bernardino County Sheriff’s detectives, using a juvenile decoy over a month-long investigation, arrested a man who attempted to solicit a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl.

The 15-year-old girl was a sheriff’s decoy. Billy Allen McCullough, 52, of Fontana, was arrested on suspicion of contact with a minor for sexual purposes last week. He appeared in San Bernardino County Superior Court this week for arraignment.

The Highland Sheriff’s station, using social media as part of an unrelated investigation, drew McCullough into a conversation. According to reports, McCullough had contacted a juvenile decoy on the social media website, soliciting “a sexual relationship.” Reports stated that McCullough “asked the age of the female juvenile, and was informed that the juvenile was 15-years-old.” McCullough, said reports, sent a nude photo to the person he thought was a 15-year-old female juvenile.
The decoy officer contacted McCullough and acted like a 15-year-old juvenile, said the report. “That conversation continued with McCullough asking the juvenile to meet with him, so they could have sex,” said Detective Donald Patton.

On June 5, a pre-designated location in Whittier was discussed between McCullough and the decoy officer. McCullough agreed to pick up the 15-year-old in his truck and allow the juvenile to run away with him for several days, said Patton. Detectives drove to the Whittier location. McCullough arrived and attempted to meet with the 15-year-old, “where he was detained by officers,” said Patton.
At the time of his arrest, McCullough was reportedly in possession of a loaded hypodermic syringe, a glass methamphetamine pipe and a bag of methamphetamine.

McCullough was arrested and booked into Central Detention Center in San Bernardino on $1 million bail. Investigators are seeking other possible victims, or anyone with knowledge about McCullough’s related activities, said investigators.

REDLANDS – Three days after gas station employees discovered card skimming devices, Redlands police arrested two men after attaching the devices at two local businesses, authorities said on Wednesday.

Oscar Manuel Meza, 37, of San Bernardino, and Jose Antonio Ramirez, 33, of San Bernardino, were arrested on Monday. Redlands Police spokesman Carl Baker said employees at two gas stations found the skimming devices, which intercept credit and debit card information when a card is inserted into the card reader.

Baker said the devices were round attached to pump No. 10 at the Unocal 76 station on the corner of Sixth St. and Redlands Blvd., along with pump No. 12 at a 7-Eleven station on the corner of Tennessee St. and Lugonia Ave.

Police disabled to the skimmers and began a surveillance operation, said Baker, “in order to identify the suspects when they returned to retrieve the devices.”
Other local gas stations were warned by fliers distributed by Police Explorers, informing them the possibility that pumps may have been some tampering done with their card-swiping devices on the pumps.
“No other business have contacted police,” said Baker

On Monday, police stopped a car leaving the 7-Eleven, locating the skimming device inside, said Baker. He warned residents to use caution when paying for gas at pumps while using a credit or debit card. “When possible,” he said, “go inside and pay the cashier rather than paying directly at the pump.”

Using a pump that is clearly visible to gas station employees is another method, he said, “and if you notice any damage or broken seals on the pump, do not use it,” said Baker, “and report it to an employee.”

Highland Smash Operation Nets 102 Arrests

HIGHLAND – Over 100 people were arrested in a Friday night raid that combined several law enforcement agencies converging upon the city on June 13.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies took part in the multiple agency tactic that was dubbed a SMASH operation. There were 102 people arrested on charges ranging from probation violations to out-of-compliance sex offenders, burglary, drug possession and weapons violations in the San Bernardino Movement Against Street Hoodlums (SMASH).

Highland, a city of 54,000 in population, rests in the county between San Bernardino and Redlands. Some 80 officers in 40 squad cars from agencies throughout San Bernardino County took part in the operation, which took place just before 3 p.m. and lasted until just before midnight, according to reports.

Officers stopped a suspected drunk driver and arrested a female passenger on a petty theft charge in Victorville. A potential drug deal was snuffed by officers who arrested two men, having discovered syringes inside a car one of the men had been sitting in. State police stopped a man riding his bicycle, arresting him with a glass pipe and suspected methamphetamine in his pocket.

A normal Friday night patrol, said law enforcement officials, includes four to five deputies on duty, unable to make contact with that many violators. The sweep was termed “extremely successful,” according to Highland law enforcement officials.

It was the fourth SMASH sweep conducted by county deputies this year, but this one led to more arrests than the other three, according to the sheriff’s department. “The primary goal of the operation,” said one law enforcement official, “was to target and identify gang members within the city of Highland.” Prisoners were taken, in chains binding their wrists and waists, in vans to county jails from the Highland station on Baseline St.

HIGHLAND – San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies, who arrested a man suspected in several burglaries on Tuesday, arrested two more suspects a day later after continuing the investigation.

Bilal Ahmad, 31, was stopped by law enforcement authorities while driving through Highland, was discovered to have stolen property in his vehicle. Later, it was discovered that additional stolen items were at his residence. Sheriff’s Dept. officials said Ahmad, who is suspected of multiple burglaries, was on parole.

Deputies may have stopped a rash of burglaries that have been taking place in recent weeks. Two burglaries took place in East Highland. Cash and jewelry was taken from area residences in recent days, said law enforcement officials. There have been other burglaries, say investigators, which have gone unsolved.

After continuing its investigation, detectives were led to Andrew Youngblood, 26, of Highland, on Wednesday. He was arrested and held at Central Detention Center on suspicion of possessing stolen property, held on $25,000 bail. He will appear in Superior Court on Friday, said officials.

Deputies were led to another residence in the 7700 block of Merito Ave. in Highland, recovering more stolen property. They took Arthur Youngblood, 28, of Highland into custody. He’s also being held on $25,000 bail at Central Detention Center; charged with possession of stolen property, scheduled for a Friday appearance in Superior Court.

Investigators said they have determined that 90 percent of the stolen items recovered were taken in two East Highland burglaries. The case broke open when investigators took Ahmad into custody on Tuesday. They had learned that a dark colored Chevrolet Astro van may have been used in the crimes, sheriff’s officials said.

Ahmad, who is being held without bail, was spotted driving that vehicle. Detectives said they believe Ahmad may have had an accomplice while committing the crimes.

He was arraigned on Monday and is likely to show up in a Victorville court on July 1 for a pre-trial hearing, authorities said on Tuesday. Payton pleaded not guilty to all charges, including special allegations, according to records.

Payton, said investigators, is accused of murdering John Gonzalez, 50, of Lucerne Valley on May 12 shortly after noon. Sheriff’s deputies were called to a residence on the 9600 block of Santa Fe Fire Rd. due to reports that gun shots had been fired in that area

The investigation led them to Payton, who was identified as the shooter, later being traced to Davis County, Utah, where he was arrested and booked. There has been no motive mentioned for the shooting. Authorities did not say if a weapon had been recovered. Also, they did not say how the shooting was connected with Payton, or how he was traced to Utah.

CHINO HILLS – An 18-year-old man broke into a home early Wednesday, stabbed a resident who returned fire, striking the suspect, before police arrived.

Chino Hills Sheriff’s deputies said that Raiveon Wooden, 18, of Chino, broke into a residence on the 2800 block of Brookside Dr. at 2:24 a.m. Deputies arrived and were told that Wooden had forced entry into the home of the unidentified home and was hiding in the garage.

“The homeowner/victim became aware that someone was in his garage,” said a sheriff’s department spokesman. “As he was approaching the garage, he was attacked by the suspect and stabbed multiple times.” The victim, whose identity was withheld by authorities, was armed with a handgun. In efforts to protect himself and his family, said authorities, he fired at Wooden and struck him twice.

Both the victim and suspect were taken to area hospitals for treatment of their injuries, which are not expected to be life threatening, said reports. Deputies were told that the suspect was the ex-boyfriend of the victim’s daughter. No one else in the residence was injured, according to investigators, who did not disclose the number of other people in the home.

When the suspect is released, say authorities, he will be booked into West Valley Detention Center on charges of attempted murder and residential burglary. Wooden, say reports, does not have a criminal record. Investigators are still pursuing more information on the case.

Chino Hills is located in the far west section of San Bernardino County, the residence just a short distance from the city’s main street, Grand Ave.

APPLE VALLEY – Deputies shot and killed a murder suspect on Wednesday night, the deadly shooting coming at the end of a short car chase.

A Los Angeles County deputy was injured in the confrontation, but the 29-year-old suspect, James Jaimez, of Ontario, was identified as the man who died as a result of being struck by deputy gunfire.

Jaimez was spotted by deputies while driving a black Nissan Titan, following him to the area of Bear Valley and Central roads. When the suspect got out of his vehicle, reports stated, there was an immediate exchange of gunfire. Several shots rang out, according to a statement.

L.A. County authorities were searching in the unincorporated area of Apple Valley when Jaimez was spotted on the 23000 block of Laramie St. at approximately 5 p.m. “Deputies observed the suspect at Bear Valley Road,” according to a statement released by the San Bernardino County coroner’s office, “where the suspect … engaged the suspect in gunfire.”

Jaimez was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:14 p.m. A female deputy was treated at a local hospital for a minor injury, then released. Jaimez was suspected in a L.A. County murder, then traced by investigators to the San Bernardino County city. No information was provided by the L.A. Sheriff’s on the apparent shooting for which Jaimez was being sought.

It was also revealed that the confrontation was caught on a cell phone video by a local resident, who later provided it to television news stations. Jaimez’s identity wasn’t released by the coroner until Friday morning. There were various businesses located near the shooting site where bystanders could have likely been caught in crossfire. There were no other injuries.

VICTORVILLE – San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies said on Friday that two women, both of Mexico, were arrested while trying to smuggle drugs into a jail on June 20. On June 27, deputies reported the arrests of Danahe Alcantar, 25, of Mexico, and Lluvia Espinoza, 29, of Mexico on charges of possession of a controlled substance and attempting to bring controlled substances into a jail.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Pamela Hoffman said the suspects showed up to the Desert View Community Correctional-Adelanto Detention Center at 10450 Rancho Rd. “Employees from (the jail),” said Hoffman, “reported that two females were scheduled to visit inmates at the facility and it was believed they would attempt to bring methamphetamine into the facility. Employees believed the females planned to transfer the methamphetamine to inmates during their visits.”

Deputy Brett Haynes investigated the claims and, while working with the jail employees to identify the female suspects, eventually received word about their arrival at the facility. Deputies made contact with both Alcantar and Espinoza in the parking lot.

Alcantar was discovered with methamphetamine in her mouth, and they and believed Espinoza had swallowed methamphetamine which she had been holding in her mouth. While both were arrested, Espinoza was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment connected to the swallowing of methamphetamine. Both women were booked at the High Desert Detention Center.

On June 23, felony charges were filed against both suspects by the Victorville District Attorney’s office. Both are being held on $25,000 bail. It was not revealed for whom the drugs were actually intended for, nor was it divulged if anyone else was suspected as the target for the drugs.

CRESTLINE – A former Riverside County Sheriff’s deputy was arrested on murder charges in the San Bernardino mountain community after shots were fired on Monday night.

Steven Michael Baumgartner, 53, was arrested on the shooting which, say authorities, came after an argument broke out with the victim, Michael Paul Clark, 38, of Crestline.

Clark was pronounced dead at St. Bernadine Medical Center in San Bernardino after being transported by helicopter. The shooting, which occurred in the 23900 block of Wildwood Ln., about five blocks from Lake Gregory.

Baumgartner, who is a former deputy in the neighboring county, and Clark were next door neighbors. There are reports that the two men were often yelling at one another. Sgt. Chris Fisher said, “Investigators learned that the shooting stemmed from a verbal dispute between the two neighbors.”

Three nights earlier, on Friday, June 27, shortly after 10 p.m., deputies were summoned to the same residence to a previous report of a dispute between the two men. Investigators did not divulge the argument that led to the shooting.

Capt. Rick Ells said that multiple calls summoned deputies to the neighborhood after Baumgartner reportedly went into his residence and returned with a .357 Magnum and allegedly shot Clark in the face one time.
Clark, said reports, fell on his back.

When gunfire broke out shortly after 5 p.m., deputies from the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Station responded to discover that Clark had been shot, according to a press release. Baumgartner, who was arrested and booked into the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga, is being held without bail, said authorities.

According to reports, Baumgartner was a sworn deputy who covered court services in the Riverside County city of Indio from 1990 through 1998.

DEVORE – A fire captain, who was lending assistance in tending to injured assault victims, recalled seeing a person that matched the description suspect provided by witnesses. San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies responded by arresting a 59-year-old man.

Dennis Dickinson of Devore was arrested on Monday night after deputies were called to the 17900 block of Hillcrest Drive shortly before 9 p.m. They discovered a pair of elderly victims, a man and his wife who had been beaten badly, with bleeding to their face and arms.

While providing medical care, Fire Captain John Flesher said he remembered seeing a person who matched the description of the suspect that had been provided by the victims, according to Deputy John Deen. Flesher, along with engineer Brian Wells and paramedic Michael Demoff, drove their fire engine to Marion Avenue and Muriel Avenue along with deputies.

“Captain Flesher volunteered to take deputies to his last known location,” said Deen. Firefighters, he said, saw Dickinson run behind a home in the darkness. Alerting the deputies, the firefighters directed them to a large field and a ravine where Dickinson was seen running. He was discovered hiding in the bushes near the bottom of the ravine, according to reports. An ambulance had taken the victims to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Dickinson was taken to the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga after deputies took him into custody. He faces felony charges of battery resulting in major injury. Authorities did not disclose any motive for the beating. Nor did they disclose the identities of the victims.

Devore is located about 10 miles north of downtown San Bernardino.

SAN BERNARDINO – The city’s 28th murder of 2014, which occurred on Monday night, ended with one death and four others who were injured. Police are looking for two suspects, both black males, said Sgt. Gary Robertson.

Orlando Wayne Hunt, Jr., 24, of Beaumont, died from multiple gunshot wounds he suffered in front of a store at 312 East Baseline Street. The shooting, which also injured four others, said Lt. Richard Lawhead, took place shortly after 11 p.m.

The shooting took place in a small strip mall, near Waterman Ave., which is one of the city’s main streets. Hunt was shot to death on the sidewalk in front of a smoke shop. Three victims were found inside the smoke shop and the other was discovered behind the store, said police. They believe he collapsed while running away from the shooting. Three of the four injured victims were male and the other was a female, the only description released by police.

The barrage of gunfire, which police said was gang and drug related, erupted at 11:11 p.m. When police arrived, they discovered the five victims, all of whom were taken to nearby hospitals. The four injured victims were listed in stable condition, according to Lawhead, “suffering from gunshot wounds to various parts of their bodies.” None of their injuries are life threatening, he said.

One night earlier, another shooting took place in the same area. A portion of the police description related that one group of multiple gunshots took place when rival gangs were shooting at each other. “One group,” said Robertson, “was firing their guns from Masters Donuts (306 East Base Line St.) toward the Jack in the Box (303 East Base Line), and the other from the Jack in the Box toward the doughnut shop.” The smoke shop employees and others took cover when the shooting started. None of the three smoke shop employees were struck, said police.

Police do not believe the two shootings were related. There were no injuries in the Sunday night shooting. Hunt’s death, said police, was the 28th in 2014.

REDLANDS – Police arrested an attempted murder suspect last week after piecing together a string of connections that led to his location.

Jeffrey Thomas Moore, 27, reportedly stabbed a 29-year-old Redlands man in the 900 block of College Ave. on May 25. Redlands police spokesman Carl Baker said the unidentified victim had been stabbed in the neck with an unknown object.

Baker said the man survived the injuries, though did not disclose his current condition. The Redlands Police Multiple Enforcement Team spotted a car that was believed associated with Moore in the parking lot of an area motel on July 9.

“As they were checking the vehicle,” said Baker, “officers spotted Moore exiting a room in the motel.” Moore tried to flee on foot, but the officers chased him down, taking him into custody at a nearby trailer rental business. Police had spotted Moore at the Super 8 Motel at 1160 Arizona St. at 11:15 p.m.

When police searched Moore, they discovered five grams of methamphetamine and, in an additional search of his motel room, found a loaded semi-automatic handgun in his backpack, said Baker.
Moore was arrested for attempted murder, possession of narcotics and for being a felon in possession of a firearm, plus evading a police officer.

Three other people in the motel room were arrested as accessories after the fact, said Baker, plus additional drug charges and parole violations. Moore, who is being held at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga, is being held on $1 million bail. He is scheduled to appear in court sometime this week.

Pregnant Woman Still Missing in San Bernardino County Desert

TWENTYNINE PALMS – Law enforcement agencies have exhausted multiple resources while spreading an exhaustive search for a missing pregnant teen-ager over more than 200 square miles of remote desert. Her disappearance, says law enforcement officials, does not appear to be volunteer.

Erin Corwin, 19, is still missing, says county sheriff’s in Friday’s latest update. Corwin, who is pregnant, initially came up missing on Saturday, June 28. Two days later, her car was discovered near the back entrance of a U.S. Marine Corps Air Combat Center. “She was last seen leaving her Twentynine Palms’ home en route to Joshua Tree National Forest,” said Sgt. Trevis Newport. She left at 7 a.m.
One day later, her husband reported her missing, he said.

An extensive air and ground search began immediately, using volunteers along with search and rescue teams. San Bernardino Sheriff’s Homicide Detail was also asked to assist.
Corwin, who is 5-feet, 2-inches, weighing 120 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes, was three months pregnant, according to reports. She was last seen driving a 2013 Toyota Corolla, blue, with California license plates (7CJX519).

Authorities said Corwin has no history of medical or psychological issues.Twentynine Palms, located in San Bernardino County, is near a U.S. Marine Base. The search area was conducted around the Joshua Tree National Park, which is located about 25 miles from Corwin’s home.

Information released during the search, said Newport, “has been minimal due to the suspicious nature of Erin’s disappearance. It could turn into a criminal investigation,” he said. “Information released about the search techniques, search areas and interviews will be minimal.” There has been no sign of Corwin, nor does her disappearance appear to be voluntary, he said.

Rescue volunteers from areas – San Bernardino, Los Angeles and Kern counties, National Park Service Rangers, plus area law enforcement agencies – have taken part in the search. U.S. Marines have also taken part in the search, said authorities.

SAN BERNARDINO – The rash of fatal shootings continued early Sunday morning when a teen-ager was gunned down during a party here.

Police arrested Darin Couzens, 25, of San Bernardino when he presented himself for treatment at an area hospital. Couzens, witnesses told police, had been wounded during the shooting. Tomanisha Nichols, 19, was shot by Couzens at 12:48 a.m. in the 4000 block of North E St., which is an unincorporated part of San Bernardino County. It was the fifth murder this month, authorities said.

Witnesses told police that Nichols, who was on her cell phone when she was struck by the bullet, may have been involved in an altercation with Couzens that led to the shooting. Couzens fled the scene, said police, and was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center, which is in the neighboring city to San Bernardino. Sheriff’s deputies arrested Couzens at the hospital. No motive was listed for the shooting.

Couzens, who is being held without bail, is being held at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga. Charged with murder, Couzens is expected in court this week. It was the 31st murder in 2014 and the pattern seems to be headed toward a number higher than last year’s total of 46. There were 47 murders in 2012. San Bernardino Police Dept. spokesman, Lt. Rich Lawhead, had listed the recent murders that have taken place within city limits.

On July 9, Juan Carlos Villapudua, 27, of San Bernardino was pronounced dead after being shot in the 2800 block of Rialto Ave. Lawhead said that people near the victim likely took his wallet and other items before police arrived. The articles were recovered by police, who said Villapudua had a history of drug-selling activities.

In a gang-related shooting, Phillip Andre Jacobs, Sr., 45, was found dead in his doorway after a gunman shot him at his San Bernardino apartment on July 8. One day before, Orlando Wayne Hunt, Jr., 24, of Beaumont was shot by two gunmen outside of a store at 312 East Base Line St. Four others were injured in what police also term gang-related.

On July 11, Shelton Nicholas, 23, was shot in an abandoned home in the 1500 block of North F St. Most of the murders, said Lawhead, are gang-related or affiliated with kind of drug sales or other illicit activities.

MONTCLAIR – A city located about 40 minutes west of San Bernardino suffered its first murder this year, according to Montclair authorities.

On Tuesday, the San Bernardino County Coroner’s office released the name of a 23-year-old Latino man who was discovered near some bushes shortly after 3 a.m. According to reports, multiple shots were heard at Exeter Ave. and San Bernardino St.

When officers arrived, they found a man who had suffered injuries to his upper torso. The victim, Joe L. Cisneros-Carrillo, of Montclair, was pronounced dead at the scene. A suspect is being sought.
In the early stages of the murder investigation, detectives determined that a red or burgundy-colored, two-door sports car was seen leaving the scene at a high rate of speed after the shooting. Authorities are pursuing the driver of that car as a possible suspect.

Motive has yet to be determined, according to police. Montclair, a city located within a largely populated area in Pomona Valley, has a very low crime rate, according to officials. Police said Cisneros-Carrillo’s death was the city’s first murder this year.

Montclair, located in the far western portion of San Bernardino County, is bordered by Upland and Chino, along with Los Angeles County cities Pomona and Claremont. Interstate 10 runs through the northern part of the city.
Both I-10 and the 210 freeway are direct routes to San Bernardino which, in direct contrast to Montclair’s murder reports, has suffered 31 murders in 2014. Since 2000, there have been 30 reported murders in Montclair.

MENTONE – A missing 85-year-old man who turned up missing on Friday was the victim of a hit-and-run in San Bernardino one day later.

John Preciado disappeared from his assisted care facility at 1376 Jasper Ave. sometime between midnight and 7 a.m., according to reports. For two days, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s had sent out alerts on the missing man who was described as being a schizophrenic. Eventually, Preciado wound up near his old neighborhood in San Bernardino, which is about 15 miles from the Mentone site where he lived.

Police said that Preciado was crossing West Rialto Ave. when he was struck by a car headed eastbound shortly before 9 p.m. The car was described as an older model Toyota. The driver did not stop, said police.

He was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center and was pronounced dead at 12:53 a.m. on Saturday, according to the coroner’s office.

Preciado had not shown up for breakfast on Friday morning, according to reports. Officials at the Sunrise Residential Care Home alerted sheriff’s officials when he turned up missing after having toured the area in search of the missing man. Preciado, who was a resident at Sunrise since 1983, loved to hike, family members told authorities. Authorities believe he hiked the entire distance from Mentone to San Bernardino.

Sheriff’s officials had dispatched several alerts after Preciado turned up missing, issuing a current photo to media outlets. Family members had also taken part in the search.

Preciado had grown up in the area around Mt. Vernon Ave. and Seventh St., family members told police. It was near that area, at West Rialto Avenue, in which the fatal collision had taken place. The site where the collision occurred is considered a high crime area in the city, which already has a high murder rate in 2014.

Police are still searching for the motorist.
